A unit standard is a registered statement of required education and training outcomes and their associated assessment criteria, as per the SAQA regulations. A number of unit standards comprise a full qualification and they therefore reflect at a specific level on the NQF with a specific number of credits. Short courses in the field of adult education are often linked to a specific unit standard.

Individuals with the necessary qualifications and experience can apply to setas for accreditation in order to assess or moderate unit standards.
